In order to protect your home against burglars, you must think like a thief. The following are the easiest way a burglar can get into your home and ways you can prevent them.

1. Things to climb on like ladders left in the yard.

Thieves will look for anyway to get to that open second story window. Most people never lock their second story windows so if a burglar can find a way into that window, your belongings are sure to be gone. Never leave ladders or other items in the yard that can be used for climbing.

2. Trash placed on the curb is a great way to let thieves know that you just purchased a new TV or other electronics.

Furniture left on the curb is a sign that you are remodeling and there are all kinds of goodies to be found inside. Take these items to the dump instead of leaving them on the curb.

4. Flimsy doors are the worst.

If they are easy to kick open or even use a crow bar, you are just inviting a thief into your home. Install better locks to ensure your door cannot be easily broken. Even stronger material for back doors and patio doors is an excellent idea.

5. Unkempt lawns are a sign you on vacation or not at home.

Too many times families do not stop the mail or the paper from being delivered which piles up on the lawn and in your mailbox. Even a lawn that has not been mowed lets thieves know you are not home. Have a neighbor or a family member pick up your mail, paper, and mow the lawn so it looks like someone it at home.

7. Geo-tracking apps are also used by burglars to know if you are at home.

If you use FourSquare and Twitter, you may be opening up the door to be robbed. Thieves are actually using www.pleaserobme.com to know where you are at all times. Watch how you use these social websites and tracking to ensure that no one is keeping an eye on you.

8. Invitations through ads are a growing problem for those wishing to sell items.

Too many times, a person will put up expensive items or even less expensive items and then when someone calls to buy, actually invite them into their homes. If you can it would be best to meet in a public location. If the item is large, have a neighbor or other friend come over during the time the person comes to purchase the item.

9. Mirrors

Mirrors by doors may be very pretty and accent your entryway, however, a burglar will then be able to see if you have a security system in place and know if it is turned on. Place mirrors away from the door so those peeking in your door cannot see in the mirror.
