We all want our lawns and yards to be pleasing to the eye; therefore, we plant all kinds of shrubs, flowers, and trees. There are a few trees you need to avoid for a variety of reasons from damaging your foundation to insects to making allergies worse. Here are the 18 trees you should never plant in your yard along with the reasons.

1. Sweetgum

"sweetgum"

The Sweetgum offers a pretty good shade, nice autumn leaves, and even food for a few animals during the winter. However, this tree has large surface roots that can ruin your lawn and if close enough to your home, damage your foundation. Along with this, the spin fruits fall to the ground and can be very painful if you step on them barefoot and they are quite hard to collect.

2. Mulberry

"mulberry"

The Mulberry tree is pretty and has a nice shape that can enhance a dull area in your yard with lots of shade, but grass will never grow beneath its limbs. On the other hand, it produces quite a bit of pollen and when the berries fall to ground makes a huge mess. It is also the only food source for silkworms.

3. Lombardy Poplar

"lombardy_poplar"

The Lombardy Poplar can provide great privacy as well as protect your home from wind. The tree only lives around twenty years and branches die quickly and will need to be trimmed. The male trees are also good at producing pollen.

4. Hybrid Poplars

"Hybrid

Hybrid Poplars are two more popular trees that have cross-pollinated. You will have a fast growing tree that is nice to the eye, but they are prone to disease and usually die in 15 years.

5. Sycamore

6. Norway Maple

"Norway

The Norway Maple is a moisture hog drawing moisture from the ground so not much else can grow in the area. The heavy shade it produces will not allow grass to grow beneath its limbs and the roots system often girdles and kills the tree.

7. Mimosa

"Mimosa_Tree"

The Mimosa is a very beautiful tree; however, it has a short life span. The branches are very weak which tend to break often, along with webworms and vascular wilt, you may wish to avoid this tree altogether. On a good note, it can usually live even during a drought.

8. Bradford Pear

"Bradford

The Bradford pear tree has a stately pyramidal shape but due to the way in which the branches grow, high winds, ice and snow are not its friend. Branches cannot take the weight or the winds and the limbs will begin to split. The flowery blooms are not pleasant to the nose either.

9. Black Walnut

"Black

The Black Walnut is known for its yummy nut and of course the furniture made from its wood. On the other hand, the tree itself creates a toxin that often kills other plants you may have planted in your yard. The walnuts fall off the tree in a hard shell and can make a huge mess that you will have to clean up. If you want to enjoy the nuts inside, you will need a hammer and special small tools to remove the nuts. May not be worth the hassles.

10. Leyland Cypress

"Leyland

11. Cottonwood

"Cottonwood"

The Cottonwood is a very beautiful tree, however it is a weak tree with shallow roots and brittle wood making harsh weather ones it enemies. The tree is also known to be susceptible to disease, insects, bacteria, and fungi. Those with allergies may not like the springtime when the pollen is floating in the air from the tree, which looks just like small cotton balls.

12. Silver maple

"Silver

The Silver maple grows fast, creates nice shade and is beautiful in autumn. The problem is it grows so quickly that the wood is brittle and limbs can be broken during high winds and storms. It has a shallow root system that damage sidewalks, sewage pipes, and drain pipes.

13. Ash

"ash"

14. Quaking Aspen

"Quaking

The Quaking Aspen is a very beautiful tree with white bark. The root system on the other hand is a nightmare as it sends up several suckers all along the way trying to grow new trees.

15. Weeping Willow

"Willow"

The Weeping Willow is a majestic tree as you stare at it, however, just beneath the ground she is one water hogging root system. The root system will attach irrigation pipes, drainpipes, and more just to get a drink.

16. Eucalyptus

"Eucalyptus"
